to Flare Up, a one-paged dedication to the relationship between Axel and Sora from the video game and manga series, Kingdom Hearts. This site was completed in July 2013, and updated to a new sub-domain in September 2016! Spoilers will be found on most sections of this site, therefore each section is expandable/compressible in order for you to limit exposure to things you may not wish to see. Version two of Flare Up features a manga image of Axel and Sora from Kingdom Hearts II. All aspects of the layout were made by me, and/or default to Adobe Photoshop CS, with the exception of fonts that were downloaded from Dafont. Axel is the Organizations "oddball" -- he is devious and uncertain of himself and the organization. He is a vicious fighter, using his flaming Chakrams.

Axel is apart of The Organization, which is a group of Nobodies. Each member wears a black hooded cloak, with a specific element and number/ranking. The Organization studies the heart in attempt to unlock the secrets behind it. The main goal of the Organization is to become fully human again. "Once we obtain Kingdom Hearts we will become complete beings!" - Xaldin.

SORA 101

NAME: Sora
NAME MEANING: Sky

"A hero of light, chosen by a mysterious weapon called the Keyblade. Sora appears in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. He generally fights alongside the Disney characters Donald and Goofy, but can also team with characters from worlds that he visits." - - - Square Enix



Sora's adventure began on Destiny Islands and he ventures in the hope of someday returning there with his friends, Riku and Kairi. Throughout his adventures, Sora faces many trials, but also gains new knowledge and abilities. He hopes to stop the villainous forces battling for Kingdom Hearts, which include numerous Disney villains and dark creatures known as the Heartless. He was also described by Nomura to have a forward personality, which allows him to make friends across the series.


"A boy chosen by the Keyblade, a mysterious weapon. Not long ago, Sora journeyed with Donald and Goofy in search of his longtime friend Kairi, who had been spirited away into the darkness. In the end, they saved the world of all worlds from the darkness that was closing in. After that, Sora continued journeying in search of Riku, who was trapped on the other side of the door to darkness. And somewhere along the way, Sora fell into a deep slumber. With a new outfit and strengthened resolve, Sora has set out once more on a search for his friend Riku." - - - Journal Entries

CHAIN OF MEMORIES

As Chain of Memories begins, Sora starts to realize that something is very wrong in the castle. Sometimes he gains old memories, and other times he feels like he lost information that he previously just had. Axel runs into Sora in the beginning and introduces himself, saying his name is "Axel. Commit it to memory." Sora doesn't seem very interested or amused to meet Axel at all. Axel immediately brings out his chakrams and tells Sora not to die on him during their first battle. After Sora defeat Axel, Axel gives Sora a fire card and disappears. As Sora and his group discuss what just happened, Axel reappears and makes a snarky remark about how he wouldn't just die from the first introduction. Sora asks him if fighting him was just a test, and Axel responds by congratulating him on "passing the test." He gives Sora words of advice to always trust his memories and in the end he will find something very special to him. He tells Sora that the most precious memories lie deep in the heart, and are usually out of reach, but he will find the one person that means the most. Sora asks Axel to explain more on where and or how he will achieve this goal, but Axel just tells him that he needs to find the "light within the darkness," and that he's lost sight of himself for now. Axel asks Sora if he wants another hint, but Sora tells him he doesn't need his help and will figure out what it is on his own in the remainder of the journey. Axel is pleased by his answer, and warns him that "when your sleeping memories awaken, you may no longer be you," as he disappears for real this time.

It becomes very apparent that Axel is showing keen interest in Sora in the eyes of the rest of the Organization Members. Axel explains to Larxene that he is interested in Sora because even though Sora became a Heartless, he still didn't lose his mind or feelings. Larxene tells Axel that it isn't Sora that interests him, but the strength of a heart. Axel says that he wants to figure out what makes Sora's "heart shine" and what "sleeps in his most secret depths."

As Sora is talking to Vexen, Axel strikes Vexen in the back from behind, brutally injuring him. Sora screams out to Axel in question and surprise, and Axel just apologizes for interrupting. He explains that for Vexen it's a good thing to die, because instead of being "no one" he can now be "nothing." Vexen dies from Axel's final slash. Sora wonders out loud, asking Axel what exactly he is, especially after seeing one of his own members killing the other one. Axel just walks away and tells Sora that he wishes himself that he knew what the answer to that question is (who he is).

As Sora is getting ready to fight Marluxia, Axel rushes in and stops the fight. Marluxia explains that now Axel must be the one to fight Sora at this point and stop him. Marluxia and Namine disappear, and Axel comments on how Sora has become a puppet to Marluxia after all. Sora gets extremely defensive and says that he will never become a puppet to any of the organization members, starting with Axel. Axel starts to refuse to fight Sora, saying that they "have a lot more in common" then he thinks. Once Axel starts to realize he has his reputation to think of, he agrees on fighting Sora. Sora defeats Axel, gathering Axel's enemy card. Axel smiles and tells Sora that he's not a bad fighter, and that it "was worth saving [his] hide after all." Sora asks Axel to explain what he meant by saving him, but Axel disappears and doesn't give him a clear cut answer. He just tells him that he isn't going to kill the suspense and leaves for good. Sora screams after him but it was too late.



Chain of Memories Quotations

????: Looks like it's my show now, Keyblade master. My name is Axel. Commit it to memory.
Sora: Um...sure.
Axel: Good, you learn quick. So, Sora, now that we're on a first-name basis... (summoning weapons) ...don't go dying on me!
Sora: Then we need these to go on...
Axel: Correct
Axel reappears, surpising the trio.
Axel: After an introduction like that, you don't think I'd just give up the ghost?
Sora: So you were just testing our strength.
Axel: Congratulations, Sora. You passed! You're ready to take on Castle Oblivion. Follow your memories. Trust what you remember, seek what you forget...and you will find someone very special.
Axel: Well, I don't know. You'll just have to give some more thought to who's most important to you. Our most precious memories lie deep in our hearts, out of reach. But you can find yours, Sora.
Sora: Where? How?
Axel: The light within the darkness. You've lost sight of it, Sora. You've forgotten forgetting.
Sora: Light? I don't understand...
Axel: Would you like a hint?
Sora: No, I want to figure it out for myself. And if you get in my way —
Axel: That's my kind of answer. Just what I'd expect from the Keyblade master. But be forewarned... When your sleeping memories awaken, you may no longer be you.

Sora: Marluxia? Who's that, and what do they have to do with Nami—
Sora: Axel!
Axel: Hey, Sora. Sorry to cut in right when he was getting to the juicy bits.
Axel: You sure love to talk. It's about time you shut up — forever.
Axel: We're nobodies, Vexen. We've got no one to be — but we still "are." So look on the bright side. You're off the hook. Now you can be nothing instead of just being nobody.
Axel: NOW you can tell me I don't respect my elders.
Sora: What the... What ARE you people?
Axel: Wish I knew the answer to that myself.

Axel: Huh?
Axel: Well, well, Sora. Marluxia made you his puppet after all.
Sora: Never. After I finish you, he's next.
Axel: Hmm... Listen, Sora. We've got more in common than you think. I'd rather not fight you...but I do have a reputation to think of!
Axel: You're not half bad. Looks like it was worth saving your hide after all.
Sora: Saving me? What do you mean?
Axel: Sorry... I'd hate to kill the suspense.
Sora: Axel!

KINGDOM HEARTS II

Axel is immediately fascinated by Sora simply because he is Roxas. (Axel finds out about this more in other games, like Chain of Memories, rather than Kingdom Hearts II) Once Axel steals Kairi from Destiny Islands, and Sora finds out, he is determined to get Axel back for his crime, and save Kairi (Kairi is not only Sora's friend, but his love interest). Once Saix points out to Sora that Axel stole Kairi, Sora gets furious, and is told to take his anger out on killing heartless and attacking Axel. Sora, Donald, and Goofy set out to find Axel and destroy him. Once Kairi was kidnapped by Axel for real, Sora started to feel weird, and Goofty insisted that maybe it was Axel stealing Kairi. Sora was very determined to find Axel and bring him down.

As Sora continues to fight heartless and nobodies to release their hearts to create the ultimate Kingdom Hearts, Axel shows up and talks to Sora for the first time. He laughs at him and insists that Sora fell "right into their trap" as he is leaning up against a rock. He tells them how Xemnas and Organization XIII's plan is to use Sora for collecting hearts. He informs them that "every heartless slain with that Keyblade releases a captive heart," which is what the Organization is after. Sora realizes that he is the one who kidnapped Kairi and calls Axel out on it. He just tells Sora "Bingo" and introduces himself to Sora. Sora boldly asks Axel to tell him where Kairi is, as Axel just scratches his head at Sora's bold question. Sora frantically says, "Please. Just tell me!" As Axel starts to say, "Look, about Kairi... I'm sorry," he is rudely interrupted by Saix appearing. Axel realizes that he needs to leave because the Organization is after him, so he begins to vanish as Sora tries to run after him. Saix boldly holds him back allowing Axel to get away. Sora, extremely frustrated, is promised by Saix to fully punish Axel once he is found for his crimes.

Sora finds himself in a bit of a pickle, being constantly attacked by Nobodies and Heartless, seeming like an unbearable amount. Axel comes and tells Sora to keep going, and to not "stop moving, or the darkness will overtake" him. Axel jumps into the battle and slices a few Nobodies with his chakram. Axel continues to push Sora by telling him to "get goin'!" Sora doesn't understand why, and questions it. Axel tells him to stop asking and "just do it!" A few Nobodies pull Axel to the ground, which causes Sora to run over and knock the Nobodies away. Concerned, Sora asks Axel if he's okay. Axel tells Sora that he did in fact kidnap Kairi, but she got away from him. He tells Sora that Saix caught her, and that he's a member of Organization XIII. He tells Sora to go and save her. A Dusk attacks Sora and Axel, as Sora flings the Dusk away. Sora screams at the Nobodies and Dusks to leave them alone, but they keep coming in great numbers. After a long fight side by side, the horde doesn't seem like it will be slowing down at all. Axel makes a joke by telling Sora he "liked it better when they were on my side." Sora jokes around back and asks him if he's "feeling a little regret." Axel cockily says, "Nah... I can handle these punks. Watch this!" as he jumps into the center and focuses his energy. His chakrams spin around, and he spouts out fire. He screams loudly, creating a gigantic torrent of flames which obliterate the Nobody horde. Sora is amazed and runs over to Axel, noticing that he is lying on the floor. He notices that Axel is starting to fade away. Axel tells him that that's what happens when you "put your whole being into an attack." Axel makes some sarcastic remarks, trying to lighten the mood about how Nobodies don't have beings. He tells Sora to hurry up and find Kairi before it's too late, and he apologizes again for what he did to her. Sora just tells him, "when we find her, you can tell her that yourself." Axel smiles and just tells him he will pass. He makes another joke, laughing weakly as he says, "My heart just wouldn't be in it, you know? Haven't got one." Sora doesn't understand why Axel gave up all of his energy for him, so he asks Axel why he did what he did. He tells Sora that he wanted to see Roxas, and how Roxas was the only person he ever liked admitting that Roxas is the only one who made him feel like he had a heart. However, he tells Sora, "It's kind of... funny... You make me feel... the same..." He openly admits to Sora that he made him feel something, which is only what Roxas was able to do before. He tells Sora that Kairi is in the dungeon, and to quickly go save her! Axel holds up his hand and opens a portal for Sora to go through. Sora stares at Axel as he completely fades away and says, "Axel..."



Kingdom Hearts II Quotations

Axel: I kidnapped Kairi, but she got away from me. After that, Saix caught her. He's a member of Organization XIII. Saix. Got it memorized? Now go save her!
Sora: Leave us alone!
Axel: I think I liked it better when they were on my side.
Sora: Feeling a little...regret?
Axel: Nah...I can handle these punks. Watch this!
Sora: Whoa!
Sora: You're...fading away...
Axel: Well, that's what happens when you put your whole being into an attack. You know what I mean? Not that Nobodies actually HAVE beings...right? Anyway, I digress. Go, find Kairi. Oh, almost forgot... Sorry for what I did to her.
Sora: When we find her, you can tell her that yourself.
Axel: Think I'll pass. My heart just wouldn't be in it, you know? Haven't got one.
Sora: Axel, what were you trying to do?
Axel: I wanted to see Roxas. He...was the only one I liked... He made me feel...like I had a heart. It's kind of...funny... You make me feel...the same... Kairi's in the castle dungeon. Now go.
Sora: Axel...

OPINIONS

For starters, I should probably point out that I do not like Axel and Sora in a romantic way, but rather in a best friend way. Though it is known that Axel likes Roxas the most out of everyone, Sora is right behind him. Axel immediately feels like he has to protect Sora and warn him about the Organization's plans before it's too late. In Kingdom Hearts II, he makes it his duty to apologize to Sora about kidnapping Kairi. He realizes what he did and how much it pained Sora to the point where he had to find him and tell him. He lets Kairi get away from him as well so that hopefully Kairi can escape and find Sora, but another Organization member captures her. Sora also gets warned by Axel that he is falling right into the trap of the Organization. Though Axel did not come out and tell him what happened, he was still looking out for Sora in the best way he possibly could. In Chain of Memories, Axel also warns Sora through out about the Organization, and tells him to keep the memories he's sure of close to him. Although he comes off sarcastic, and probably is a lot, Axel watches Sora a lot more, and begins to get a soft spot. At the end of Chain of Memories, Sora wants to fight Axel, and Axel refuses for awhile, trying to convince Sora that "they have a lot more in common" then he thinks. Axel only fights Sora when he thinks of his own reputation. After the battle, he tells Sora he is a good fighter, and that Sora is worth being saved. This links back to the end of Kingdom Hearts II when Axel turns his body into an ultimate attack to benefit Sora's behalf. Axel commits suicide in order to give Sora a chance to save Kairi and the worlds from the wrong-doings of the Organization.

With this said, I guess I just really respect Axel for all that he does for Sora. A part of me used to hate Sora because he was the reason why Axel had to leave the game, and die, but I realized that Axel did it out of love and hope for Sora. Sora was just a bit blind, and I don't really know if he appreciated it as much as he should have. But, regardless, I love them in a friendship way, and I think that Sora and Axel would have stayed friends if Axel didn't have to die.
