There's a reason why I cannot yieldAll the following information is based on my personal opinions or facts on Talim from the Soul Calibur games she appeared in unless stated otherwise. There are many UNMARKED SPOILERS so please be careful while reading!
Talim lives in the Village of the Wind Diety, which is in the Visayan Islands, or modern day Philippines. These early settlers were animist tribal groups who worshipped many natural deities. The Visayans were thought to have kept close diplomatic relations with Malaysia and Indonesian kingdoms since the tribal groups of Cebu were able to converse with Enrique of Malacca using the Malay language when the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521. After the Magellan expedition, King Philip II of Spain sent Ruy Lopez de Villalobos and Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1543 and 1565 and claimed the islands for Spain. The Visayas region and many tribes began converting to Christianity and adopting western culture.
This battle between the natives and the Spanish is what Talim is striving to prevent by taking the journey for Soul Edge. This was a real life problem for the people on these islands, not just a made up story. They were treated horribly, murdered, and colonized to do what the Spanish wanted them to. The reason Talim was going to be the last priestess is because the Spanish were not going to allow their animistic religious traits to continue. The image to the left shows native drawings the depict what both men, and women, wore on these islands. The dress has many similarities to Talim's wardrobe and style as well. I believe that the creators of Soul Calibur did a great job on the history of Talim's home land, and gave her a real reason to fight to save not only her country but her freedom from Spanish influence and rule. Unfortunately, the Spanish did take over in the end and colonized everything.
