In the Western World
, many people believe in that their horoscope, based on their astrological sign, can depict their personality, as well as their future. Translating from the Chinese Zodiac, Kyou would be a Capricorn
. Capricorn is the tenth
astrological sign, originating from the constellation of Capricornus. It spans the 270-300th degree of the zodiac, corresponding to celestial longitude. Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn, and is the element Earth. The birth dates for this sign are from December 21st - January 19th
. When looking at horoscope traits, it's important to specify whether your Capricorn is a male or female. In our case, Kyou is a man (even if he gets called girly by Uotani). So, lets break it down into the seven main personality traits for a Capricorn man, as well as how it relates to Kyou:
AMBITION VS. LAZINESS
Capricorn men can be really driven if they want to be because, like a goat, they are very stubborn and hard-headed. This is why many Capricorn men become very successful, and/or leaders. However, some Capricorn men can be seen as extreme lazy because of their bad habits. They often sleep in late, can care little to none about societal goals, and tend to move around in a big circle. Most of the time these types of Capricorns exist because they haven't figured out what their goals are yet. Be sure to not write off your Capricorn male, however, because they all have seeds of greatness planted within them. We can see this in Kyou. He started off really frustrated with the world, so he didn't set many realistic goals for himself. Eventually, the seed inside of him sprouted, and he ended up having more success than he could have imagined.
TYPICAL GUY VS. EXTREME PERSONALITY
Capricorn men can often be called boring, and this is because they often play-by-the-book. Capricorn men will always try to do it the right way, or the way of others expect it to be done. Unfortunately, too many people waste their lives trying to live the lives of other people. Interestingly enough, the Capricorn men who go on their extreme Bohemian streak are often the happiest of them all. They will still get their rent paid, or their responsibilities done, but they live life by their own rules. Often times, it takes a Capricorn time to realize that there is only one life, and they deserve to live it in their own personal way. We see Kyou in the beginning, always living the life of the "Cat," getting pushed around and talked down to. He accepted this because that is what the way of his world was. However, in the end, he pushes his own happiness back into the world, showing that his life should be up to him.
WARRIOR VS. HAPPY GO LUCKY
Many Capricorns grow up very quickly once they get burned, once they get taken advantage of, or once they get cheated and betrayed for the first time. The saddest Capricorn men are the ones that work really hard, try really hard, sacrifice really hard and at the same time still end up extremely unhappy. There has to be a balance. The most evolved Capricorns are those that have been able to temper their worry or deflect it in such a way that they are fulfilled, and they're content. The Capricorn man needs to find a balanced middle between the warrior and the happy-go-lucky in order to find success and happiness in their lives. Kyou was taken advantage of a lot when he was a child, and constantly blamed for things he had no real control of. He tried to work hard to get over that, but really all he did was run away from the truth, and he was unhappy. Until he found the balanced middle, he stayed unhappy. Thankfully, he found someone, Tohru, to help him get there.
Capricorn men always take things carefully and cautiously. They tend to go for the high middle instead of going all the way. This can often mean that they settle for romantic relationships which they know deep down are less than ideal. It's their push back against the drives that they are feeling all the time, which causes them to be fatalistic. They can feel the pressure, but they choose to respond to that pressure by giving up or rebelling. Kyou in the beginning, did feel the pressure and was fatalistic. However, he met a girl that iwasn't middle ground, someone who was out of his league. She taught him how to deal with his anxiety and led him to learn how to deal with the pressure in a healthy manor.
Capricorn men can never believe 100% in faith, and are often pushed by fear towards success. When they are optimistic, they must give themselves permission to be optimistic. This means they always make sure that they are fully ensured in their situation. Other signs might think this is sad, but this is the reality of the Capricorn personality. We see this when Tohru tells Kyou she loves him, and he tells her that her feelings are irrational, and made up. He doubts her because he is so pessimistic.
Capricorn men are almost always loyal partners. They look at relationships as something that they worked on, and they are currently working on. And just like anything else in their lives where they invested a lot of work, they don't want to see it become meaningless. As we see from the ending of Fruits Basket, Kyou stays loyal to Tohru, and loves her into their old age.

Capricorn men only have one person who can stop their distinct drive and ability to achieve, and that is himself. They have the ability to sabotage themselves at ease. Capricorn males say to themselves things like "this is not worth doing," "this is a waste of time," "you can't do it," "you shouldn't do it," eventually destroying their will to succeed. When it comes to psychological stability and consistency, they can be one of the most conflicted. This is 100% Kyou, and thankfully for him and the ones who love him, he is able to grow and overcome these emotions he puts on himself.
