HISTORY: Hermes was an Olympian God in Greek Mythology, the son of Zeus and the Pleiad Maia. He was second youngest of the Olympian gods. Hermes was a god of transitions and boundaries. He was quick and cunning, and moved freely between the worlds of the mortal and divine, as emissary and messenger of the gods, intercessor between mortals and the divine, and conductor of souls into the afterlife. He was protector and patron of travelers, herdsmen, thieves, orators and wit, literature and poets, athletics and sports, invention and trade. In some myths he is a trickster, and outwits other gods for his own satisfaction or the sake of humankind. His attributes and symbols include the herma, the rooster and the tortoise, purse or pouch, winged sandals, winged cap, and his main symbol was the herald's staff, the Greek kerykeion or Latin caduceus which consisted of two snakes wrapped around a winged staff.

Junpei and Hermes have some things in common especially in the beginning of the game. Junpei acts God like, whereas Hermes is one. He tries to be better than he is and he tries to act superior almost to others. However, Hermes is labeled as a protector of those who are weak. This made me think about how Junpei swears to protect Chidori, who grew up with various health conditions, and well, is still weak. After her death, Junpei still swears to protect her as well. Hermes is also the conductor of souls in the afterlife. If you talk to Junpei the right amount of times, you can bring Chidori back to life. Those are a few similarities I found between Junpei and his first persona, Hermes.

HISTORY: Hermes Trismegistus, "thrice-greatest Hermes," is the purported author of the Hermetic Corpus, a series of sacred texts that are the basis of Hermeticism. The Asclepius and the Corpus Hermeticum are the most important of the Hermetica, writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, which survive. During the Renaissance it was accepted that Hermes Trismegistus was a contemporary of Moses, however after Casaubon's dating of the Hermetic writings as no earlier than the second or third century CE, the whole of Renaissance Hermeticism collapsed. Modern occultists suggest that some Hermetic texts may be of Pharaonic origin, and that the legendary "forty-two essential texts" that contain the core Hermetic religious beliefs and philosophy of life remain hidden in a secret library. In some trance "readings" of Edgar Cayce, Hermes or Thoth was an engineer from the submerged Atlantis, who also built, designed or directed the construction of the Pyramids of Egypt.

This final stage that Junpei gets is very important because Hermes combines with Medea, Chidori's Persona, and creates the ultimate one. This shows that Chidori wasn't lying when she said she'd always be there for Junpei to protect him. Chidori gives her life away to save Junpei, pushing her Persona into him to heal him. In old texts, there are pictures of Trismegistus with a book in one hand and a healing wand in the other, like the photo to the left. This is important because even in the historical books, this Persona has the ability to heal and learn. Junpei really grows up after Trismegistus comes and the death of Chidori.
